Mechanical ventilation is a necessary lifesaving treatment proving respiratory support for critically ill patients. Unfortunately, this treatment also causes harm to those patients in the form of ventilator induced diaphragm disfunction (VIDD). Here patients loose respiratory strength at an alarming rate due to the disuse of those muscles. This dramatically increases the time these patients stay on the ventilator as they cannot breathe on their own, even when their illness has been resolved. XN Health is an early-stage medical device company developing a novel therapeutic device to prevent and combat the progression of VIDD to help wean patients off the ventilator faster. By providing electrical stimulation to the phrenic nerves, our device induces contractions of the diaphragm that help maintain the integrity of this muscle. This treatment will speed up patient liberation times, shorten stays in the ICU, improve healthcare outcomes, and reduce associated health care costs.
