Patient stress is a prevalent issue within the veterinary field. Among the different contributors to stress within a small animal clinic are the exam tables. Currently, tables have very slippery surfaces which make patients feel insecure in an already-stressful situation. This instability can lead to patient anxiety, manifesting in reactionary biting and scratching. This creates a stressful situation for clients, as they witness discomfort from their pets. The problem of fear in the veterinary clinic inspired me and my two partners to develop the product and company, AutoMat. AutoMat is an axillary device designed for veterinary exam tables to help create a more comfortable and efficient veterinary experience. The product consists of a retractable, non-slip mat housed in a container with UV-C light to disinfect the mat between each usage. The non-slip surface reduces patient stress, and the self-disinfecting feature expedites the cleaning process for technicians while ensuring proper sanitation protocol. AutoMat’s patented technology was initially developed for veterinary use but can be adapted to many different settings such as airports, labs, food processing facilities, and other healthcare facilities. There is vast potential for AutoMat’s application and with the right support, we can expand further to capture a larger market.
